Cariz: (from Spanish): look, appearance, aspect of someone or situation.
Cumbal: A volcano (last major eruption in Dec 1926) and town located in the remote southwest of Colombia, at the point where the knotted bulk of the Andes splits into three massive ridges. It was to here, where the Inca Empire stretched its northern most frontier.
The people of Cumbal have lived for centuries with the volcano just 5km away from their doorsteps.
The audio is an extract taken from a live parade during the 2008 Carnival of Blacks and Whites, held annually in the region.
